Are you ready to take your love for sailing to the next level? Our Keelboat Instructor Course is the perfect opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to become certified instructors, opening doors to a world of exciting teaching opportunities.

We use the Hawk 20 keelboat which is well built, modern and comfortable, having an enormous amount of space in the cockpit, as well as providing exciting performance when racing, even in heavy weather. It a 6m unsinkable, self-draining and self-righting keelboat with an engine.

What You'll Learn?

During this comprehensive 5-day course, you'll gain the knowledge and skills needed to teach techniques both afloat and ashore. Our expert Trainers will equip you to instruct RYA Keelboat courses, ensuring you are well-prepared to inspire and educate the next generation of sailors.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in various aspects, including:

  • Course preparation, including knowledge of key teaching points
  • Effective delivery and management of sessions both ashore and afloat
  • Customer liaison, including techniques for dealing with different learning styles

Rest assured, our instructors are specialised in teaching on keelboats, ensuring you receive expert  training.

Validity: Your RYA Keelboat Instructor award will be valid for five years from the date of issuance, provided that you maintain a valid first aid certificate. It can be renewed on application to the RYA based on having completed a minimum amount of instruction.

Course Overview:

  • Day One: Introduction to Course, and Teaching Beginners part 1: across the wind, upwind and tacking
  • Day Two: Teaching Beginners part 2: 4 Essentials, downwind, gybing and Man Over Board
  • Day Three: Mastering keelboats under power
  • Day Four: Teaching / Coaching at higher levels including Day Sailing
  • Day Five: Moderation Day, including input from another Trainer
