RYA Keelboat Instructor Pre-Assessment

The RYA Keelboat Pre-entry assessment is for aspiring RYA Keelboat Instructors. This is need to be completed in advance of the full RYA Keelboat Instructor Course to check personal abilities.
- Sail around a triangular course of 100m (minimum) legs to the best of their ability using all the boats normal equipment demonstrating appropriate sail position on all points of sailing and awareness of the 4 Essentials.
- Sail a tight circular course around a stationary boat, making only one tack and one gybe, always demonstrating competence in these transitions and appropriate boat control
- Sail a follow my leader course behind a powered boat. The course may include all points of sailing and the sailor needs to demonstrate effective speed control.
- Pick up a man overboard dummy under sail; the boat needs to be stopped in the water on pick up and more than one attempt should not be needed.
- Anchor the keelboat using appropriate techniques for wind with tide and / or wind against tide
- Ability to manoeuvre the keelboat safely under power demonstrating close manoeuvres such as coming alongside, picking up a mooring and turning in a confined space
The candidate may also be asked to complete some of the following:
- Sail without a rudder, or with the tiller on a loose elastic, around a triangular course. You will be expected to make good progress around the course in a seamanlike manner (not applicable to keelboat or multihull instructor candidates).
- Lee shore landing and departure
- Anchor or pick up a mooring - wind against tide (if appropriate)
- Come alongside a moored boat - wind against tide (if appropriate)
- Recover a capsized dinghy and sail away
