Course introduction
The RYA Youth Stage 4 course is designed for young sailors who are ready to advance their skills. This two-day course focuses on transferring previously learned skills to double-handed boats. Participants will enhance their ability to rig, launch, recover, and handle more complex sailing scenarios, including man-overboard recovery. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded their RYA Stage 4 certification, marking a key milestone on the path to more advanced sailing courses.
Course content
- Rigging, launching, and recovering double-handed dinghies
- Sailing as both crew and helm, mastering team coordination
- Practising maneuvers such as tacking, gybing, and recovering a man overboard
- Learning to sail a double-handed boat on all points of sail
- Enhancing practical sailing skills to navigate in moderate conditions
- Refining boat handling and speed control

Ability after course
By the end of this course, participants will be able to sail a double-handed dinghy confidently, performing all necessary maneuvers and sailing on all points of sail. They will also have developed the ability to launch and return to various locations, including beaches, jetties, and moorings, in moderate conditions. This course sets the foundation for more advanced sailing techniques and challenges in the RYA National Sailing Scheme.
