Course Overview

This one-day pre-assessment is required for those aiming to take the RYA Keelboat Instructor Course. It evaluates your personal sailing abilities and readiness for the full instructor training, with exercises that assess sailing technique, boat handling, and safety skills.

Assessment Includes

  • Sailing a triangular course with awareness of key sailing techniques.
  • Maneuvering around a stationary boat with controlled tacking and gybing.
  • Following a powered boat to demonstrate speed control on different points of sail.
  • Conducting a man-overboard recovery under sail.
  • Anchoring techniques in various wind and tide conditions.
  • Powerboat handling, including close-quarter maneuvers.

Additional skills may include:

  • Sailing without a rudder around a course.
  • Lee shore landing and departure.
  • Anchoring or mooring in challenging conditions.
  • Recovering a capsized dinghy (if applicable).
