Course introduction
The RYA Adult Level 1 is a 2-day introductory sailing course designed for complete beginners. If you're new to sailing, this course is the perfect starting point to get acquainted with the fundamentals. You’ll learn the basics of rigging, launching, and sailing in light winds, under the expert supervision of our instructors. This course will set you on the path to gaining confidence on the water and mastering the essential skills of sailing.
Course content
- Introduction to rigging, launching, and sailing
- Sailing in all directions
- Basic sailing theory and boat handling
- How to safely launch and recover the boat
- Sailing in light winds under supervision
Pre-requisites and assumed knowledge
- Age: There is no minimum age, though children under 16 may prefer to join the Youth Sailing Scheme for more age-appropriate learning.
- Pre-requisite: No prior experience is needed for this beginner course.
Ability after course
By the end of the course, you will have the skills to sail a small dinghy in light winds under supervision. You will also be able to rig and launch the boat safely, and have a basic understanding of sailing in all directions.
